Feedback responsiveness.

How you react determines whether people keep giving you feedback.
What you do next determines whether you get better.

Why it matters

Asking for feedback is easy. Hearing it isn't.

A hard note can be fuel for faster growth, but only if you stay open instead of rushing to defend yourself. The people who improve the most are rarely the most talented. They are the least defensive.

Defensiveness is usually fear in disguise: fear of criticism, fear of failing. At Pixar, directors show unfinished films to a group of peers who give blunt notes. The notes aren't orders, but the best directors use them, and that is how rough early versions become films people love.

This openness is learned in the moments when a coach's voice can still change the outcome. It's the difference between ten years of experience and one year lived ten times over.
