Leading without authority.

You don't need to be in charge to raise the standard.
Sometimes people lift because of what they see you do.

Why it matters

People follow what you do, not your title.

The people who shape a team's standards often have no official role. Influence can't be handed to you. You earn it through the example you set, not the title you hold.

The best leaders rarely announce that they're leading. They just get on with it. In 1989, yachtsman Ian Kiernan, fed up with the rubbish he had seen while sailing around the world, organised a day to clean up Sydney Harbour. He wasn't in charge of anything. More than 40,000 people turned up, and a year later it became Clean Up Australia.

This kind of leadership takes root where there's no title to stand behind. It's how culture changes at work, one example at a time, without anyone needing a promotion.
